I started raising rats to provide a whole prey model red meat protein source for my raw fed dog. Soon I started offering them to my cats as well, and now I joke that my cats get caviar cat food when they get a red eyed devil or silvermane for dinner.
It didn't take me long to realize that working with the cool color genetics that appeal to me made cleaning tubs less of a chore.
I still have my feeder lines, but I also raise Red Eyed Devils, Black Eyed Martens, Black Eyed Siamese, Mink, Black, Agouti and Blue Silvermanes, Pearl Merles, Odd Eyes, Recessive Blazes, Red Eyed Blues, Red Eyed Siamese, Himi, Mink and the occasional Harley. I have normal fur and rex, top ears and dumbos.
Mice come in all of the fun colors that rabbits and rats don't, and it didn't take long to get set up with a small rack of mice. The cats far prefer rats over mice, but I like my mice, enjoy working with the colors, and they make a good barter item, so I'm keeping them.
I have feeder mice in lots of colors and patterns and fancy/typey show mice that take a little longer to reach maturity, but get a good bit bigger than the feeder line. Fancy mouse coats and patterns include but are not limited to agouti, brindle, pied, extreme black, Abyssinian, satin, rex, tan, fox, tri/splash, himi, pied tan, sable, black, blue, beige, champagne, chocolate, orange, red, fawn, dove, lilac and white.
Rats and mice are available as feeders, breeders and pets.
